Caro, Iona and Kanaya are the three local councillors for Riverside & Pontcanna
We try and serve three main functions
1. We act on your behalf to ensure the council is well run and delivering for the citizens of Cardiff
This includes sitting on panels; attending full council meetings; proposing policy; sitting on scrutiny committees; sitting on appointment panels; receiving regular briefings on services; fulfilling the role of ‘corporate parent’ (ensuring child protection and social services are looking after children and vulnerable adults in our care). We also set the budget for the Council, and elect the leader of the council and the Lord Mayor.
This role is city wide, and we are expected to act in the best interests of all citizens of Cardiff, not only those in Riverside.
2. Supporting and acting on behalf of residents
This includes daily contacts: emails, tweets, phone calls, Whatsapp messages and even good old fashioned letters. Queries include: housing issues, parking problems, waste management and litter, drains, street lighting, anti-social behaviour, planning issues, school placements.
We will either advise on the issue or seek advice from the Council and Cabinet Members. We may support or raise a petition on residents’ behalf to formalise and escalate an issue.
Objecting to planning or licensing applications is common, and we often attend the relevant committees or panels to present the case for opposing an application on behalf of residents (and occasionally to support one).
Residents will often also get in touch about wider policy issues and concerns. We’ll either pass these on, or raise them in different policy settings.
There may be issues that are more relevant to the resident’s Member of the Senedd MS or Member of Parliament MP. We keep in close contact with Mark Drakeford MS and Kevin Brennan MP to ensure residents get support.
3. Improving the ward
Your Councillors want to see the ward improved on behalf of all residents. They do this by lobbying for things, putting forward ideas, pointing out opportunities to Council officers and cabinet members.
This has included things like improved parks and playground facilities; road resurfacing; more regular community services; safer road crossings etc.
But it isn’t just what the Council can do. Supporting voluntary groups and things like litter picks and leaf sweeps are also ways in which the area is improved is also a big part of the role. This has included groups such as Keep Riverside Tidy, The Big Sweep, the Cardiff Bangladeshi Society, The Riverside Festival and Women Connect First.

Caro, Iona and Kanaya hold regular surgeries in Riverside. Advice surgeries are open to all residents of Riverside. This is your opportunity to speak to them about any issues that they might be able to help with e.g. housing, planning, licencing, noise, education, your area, etc.
