Iona has lived in Riverside for 35 years, and was elected Riverside ward Councillor in 2011. She was re-elected in 2012.
Iona came to Cardiff to study City Planning and her first job was in regeneration of the Docks area of Newport. She went on to develop services in the voluntary sector such as Women’s Aid, English for Pregnancy – a home tutor project and the Cardiff AIDS Helpline.
She worked as a VS0 volunteer for the Zambian Ministry of Health for 4 years before returning to Wales. After gaining a MSc in Health Promotion, Iona joined the NHS Public Health team in Cardiff. During this time she established the Ely Communities First programme, the Cardiff Walk for Health scheme and the Cardiff Healthy Schools Network. She has a good working knowledge of Cardiff’s charitable and statutory sector services and providers.
She is married and her two, now grown up daughters went to Severn Primary school. Iona is an LEA school governor there now.
On Cardiff Council Iona is a member of the Planning Committee, the Children & Young People’s Services Scrutiny Committee and is the Member Champion for Cycling and Sustainable Transport. Her interests focus on fairer opportunities for everyone, community cohesion, environment / green issues, reducing carbon emissions and promoting cycling and walking. She is a charity trustee of S. Riverside Community Centre, BRG Home Start and Grassroots City Centre youth project.
